Alibaba Group added 104 million monthly active users to its Chinese online retail marketplaces during the year to March 31.

The company said its Taobao platform continues to grow fast. This year, a new interface was launched aimed at improving the user experience through content innovation and intelligent personalised recommendations.

“It delivers a customised shopping experience by segmenting users based on behavior data and providing them with more recommendations to enhance product and content discovery,” the company said in a statement. “The new interface also includes Taobao’s innovative content, such as curated posts, short-form videos and live-broadcast events. These initiatives drove strong growth in user engagement, purchase conversion and annual active consumers.”

Despite China’s slower economic growth and trade tensions with the US, the total value of the BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Chinese Brands rose 30 percent to $889.7 billion this year, the highest annual increase since the ranking launched in 2011, according to a recent report released in Beijing on Monday.

The annual BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Chinese Brands ranking, jointly prepared by advertising holding company WPP and its research firm Kantar Millward Brown, shows the growth was fuelled by brands accelerating their expansion into China’s lower tier cities, which have seen rapid development and rising consumer buying power, and increasingly positive attitudes to Chinese consumer brands with a global presence.

Alibaba has been crowned the most valuable brand in China for the first time in the annual ranking, having grown its brand value by 59 percent year-on-year to $141 billion.

Queenie Liao, an office worker in Guangzhou, China, shops online several times a week. Alibaba’s Taobao and JD.com are her go-to platforms, but it wasn’t always that way.

“I used to use Amazon a few years ago. Amazon was one of the first online shops in China and a lot of friends told me that the things from Amazon were much more trustable. That’s why I used it,” Liao told CNBC. “Taobao and JD have more items now.”

Her shift in attitude underscores one of the major reasons why Amazon is thought to be struggling in China. The U.S. e-commerce giant now plans to close its domestic marketplace business in China.

Need your daily dose of bubble tea but can’t bear the consequences of weight gain? Why not hire someone else to drink your bubble tea?

Apparently, that is now a thing in China — sellers have started to market themselves as ‘bubble tea drinkers by proxy’ on online marketplace Taobao.

These Taobao listings are not only attracting customers but also potential employees, 22-year old Ms Xu said that she joined the business because she is a big fan of milk tea. She usually charges 2 yuan (S$0.40) for the service, and 3 yuan if the drink is above 550ml.

There may be no other market in the world where commerce and entertainment are more integrated than in China. For one, the country is leading the world in using livestreaming to engage consumers on e-commerce platforms, where influencers leverage the medium to bring products to life when they might otherwise remain static on a webpage. Here’s proof that it’s working: Alibaba’s Taobao Marketplace generated more than 100 billion RMB ($15.1 billion) in gross merchandise volume (GMV) through livestreaming sessions in 2018, an increase of almost 400% year-on-year.

In China, a lot of clothes shopping takes place online, and one of the leading sites where it happens is Taobao. The Alibaba-owned site is the country’s largest e-commerce marketplace, claiming 636 million active users in 2018.

That volume gives it good insight into what sort of items shoppers are looking for in China, which is set to overtake the US as the world’s largest fashion market this year. In a new report, Taobao laid out the top trends it’s seeing. Among them was a surge in shoppers happy to overlook stereotypical gender ideas about who should wear what.

“According to Taobao transaction data, female consumers prefer more neutral and ‘masculine’ fashion items whereas male consumers are becoming more sophisticated and gravitate toward gender neutral, ‘China cool’ streetwear pieces,” says a translated copy of the report provided to Quartz.

Women nowadays are becoming bolder in expressing the things they want and the things they love. They tend to be stronger in fighting off their fears and limitations. This new and amazing attitude can also be displayed through how they present themselves, especially on how they mix and match everything from their shoes, dresses, suits, accessories, and bags.

This new personality trait of women could be the main reason why Alibaba’s Taobao predicted that women shoppers would be more interested in suits in the future than males. This prediction was released by the fashion site last Monday, according to China Daily.

Taobao’s prediction is not just simply based on imagination. As a matter off act, the China-based fashion brand’s data revealed that searches for “big-brother oversized blazer” and oversized blazer sales increased to 317% and 139% respectively.
